Hochstein Youth Singers & Little Singers – Why We Sing

“Why We Sing” is especially poignant given that during the past 14 months the world hasn't been able to sing together… or even BE together. Maryellen Giese and Grace Adams chose this song for the Hochstein Youth Singers and Little Singers because the text describes how singers feel about singing, and it’s the perfect piece to end our year of singing social justice repertoire. #HochsteinSchool #HochsteinYouthSingers #lovetosing =============================== “Why We Sing” by Greg Gilpin Sung by the Hochstein Youth Singers, May 2021 Hochstein Youth Singers, directed by Maryellen Giese Hochstein Little Singers, directed by Grace Adams Yasuko Kelly – HYS Rehearsal Accompanist Alexander Nick – HYS Student Intern from Eastman School of Music Jon Madden – Assistant, Audio/Video Editor Blair Hornbuckle – photography Soloists: Claire Neuderfer Alicea Bunt Carl Bradford Walter Hochstein Little Singers: Milania Jovcevski Adequin Meisenzahl Jennelise Mellon Antonio Reyes Tomas Oster Carl Bradford Walter Hochstein Youth Singers: Sean Adams Ashley Beyer Lauryn Beyer Alicea Bunt Maya Cameron Anastajia Charley Delaney Cranmer Lizzy Creary Tayler D’Angelo Camren Derby-Lynch Caroline Fountain Beatrix Freeman Willa Freeman Katy Gaul Una Gogstetter Ronin Hiller May Hornbuckle Olivia Koegel Joshua Kruchten Maura Lutz Isabella Mettler Mary Muller Claire Neuderfer Luciano Pagano Brynn Peters Vijval Ramaiah Maeve Rosati Caroline Salamone Janis Schreiber Ellie Sharp Sophie Sharp Natalia Sierra-Wardlow Journey Snead Phillip Urai Jaleesah West =============================== Lyrics of "Why We Sing" A sound of hope. A sound of peace, A sound that celebrates and speaks what we believe. A sound of love, A sound so strong, It’s amazing what is given when we share a song. Chorus This is why we song, Why we lift our voice, Why we stand as one in harmony. This is why we song, Why we lift our voice, Take my hand and sing with me. Soothe a soul, Mend a heart, Bring together lives that have been torn apart. Share the joy, Find a friend, It’s the never-ending gift That circles back again. Chorus Music builds a bridge, It can tear down a wall, Music is the language That can speak to one and all. Chorus

Be the Change - Hochstein Youth Singers

Hochstein Youth Singers Director Maryellen Giese chose “Be the Change” because of its hopeful, upbeat, and universal message empowering us ALL – kids and adults alike – to make a difference in our world. This is the second piece the HYS have learned this year from the free Justice Choir Songbook (https://www.justicechoir.org). With words adapted from Mahatma Gandhi, it was originally written to be sung a cappella but HYS assistant and video editor Jon Madden (a Hochstein alum!) added a gospel-style accompaniment that provides just the right amount of drive and sparkle. #HochsteinSchool #HochsteinYouthSingers #lovetosing “Be the Change” by Marc Kaplan and Colin Britt words adapted from Mahatma Gandhi from the Justice Choir Songbook Sung by the Hochstein Youth Singers, March 2021 Directed by Maryellen Giese Yasuko Kelly – Rehearsal Accompanist Alexander Nick – Student Intern from Eastman School of Music Jon Madden – Assistant, Audio/Video Editor Soloists: Beatrix Freeman May Hornbuckle Willa Freeman Vijval Rahmaiah Anastajia Charley Maeve Rosati Delaney Cranmer Luciano Pagano Ashley Beyer Lauryn Beyer Alicea Bunt Phillip Urai Hochstein Youth Singers: Sean Adams Ashley Beyer Lauryn Beyer Alicea Bunt Maya Cameron Anastajia Charley Delaney Cranmer Lizzy Creary Tayler D’Angelo Camren Derby-Lynch Caroline Fountain Beatrix Freeman Willa Freeman Katy Gaul Una Gogstetter Ronin Hiller May Hornbuckle Olivia Koegel Joshua Kruchten Maura Lutz Isabella Mettler Mary Muller Claire Neuderfer Luciano Pagano Brynn Peters Vijval Ramaiah Maeve Rosati Caroline Salamone Janis Schreiber Ellie Sharp Sophie Sharp Natalia Sierra-Wardlow Journey Snead Phillip Urai Jaleesah West
